I've been there a couple of times. Hamburg is great.

St Pauli as an area is quite an experience. The red light area is comparable to Amsterdam's but with fewer tourists. But also more bars, and general nightlife mixed in. And then there's the squats. Mind you, that was the 90s - it's been a while. Then you have to do the Fischmarkt at 5 on a Sunday morning. Live music, booze, all jostling with fresh fish and all kinds of crap. Brilliant.
