If he gets sacked he gets compensation which he wouldn't if he walked

Maybe he's trying whatever the converse of constructive dismissal is, basically getting more and more t**ttish (if that were possible) till they get rid (and pay him off handsomely) - he needs to stay the right side of gross misconduct, must be a hard line to walk.
