Does it ever strike anybody that we often sign players who start off doing really well and look well motivated and then slowly slip into a comfort zone until becoming ineffective or at worst given the cold shoulder and linger in the reserves while we're getting beaten every week ?
Maybe Worthy gives the big motivational efforts when he first meets the player and encourages him along until he sees the required level, then turns his attentions away to other matters thinking "job done there". Then the player in question slowly sinks back to the minimum level knowing he is comfortable or, in the case of some players, sinks all the way to the "taking the piss" level of commitment and ends up frozen out of the picture.
Or maybe not, but the pattern seems to be there.
