Oh - before I go, let me explain Selwyn as I see it

He's superstitious. He thinks that if he says we'll lose, we won't. And he'd rather throw everyone into a frothing rage than risk tempting The Duchess. So he'll take all the hate in the hope that he's helping the team.

Or i could be giving him miles too much credit, and he's a troll. I think it's the former, though.
