I was at NS in the late 70s

There was only one boy of Afro-Caribbean descent. He was accepted and liked but I remember two bad incidents.

One was the annual Cup Run, a cross-country event on Mousehold Heath. The route took us along a stretch of pavement along a road, on the other side of which was the playground of a state school (Heartsease?). Their pupils had lined up behind the chain link fence to shout abuse at the "toffs" puffing past on the other side of the road, and when this boy ran past (he was just ahead of me) the whole lot started shouting "nigger nigger nigger". He flicked them the Vs and we ran on. No-one ever mentioned it afterwards.

The other was in a chemistry lesson when some prat made a joke at his expense about "Cadbury's take them and they cover them in chocolate". There was a horrified pause, he shot back a reply about the Milky Bar Kid and there was an explosion of relieved laughter. But what I really remember was the ghastly northern Chemistry master (Bob Worsely?) , who had heard it all, not doing anything about it.
