Remember: if we don't buy him, there will still be two palatable options. Either we extend his loan, or we get someone else. If Whitbread remains lame, we'll definitely do one or the other.

Barnett is a good player, but there are any number of reasons why signing him may not be straightforward and rather than fear that it will reflect a lack of ambition should we fail to keep him, I'll take the view that we'll still end up no worse defensively, one way or another. ILWT.
