and this bizarre sequence of events will follow Rooney around for a while yet, affecting his relationships with a lot of people at the club.
For me, he has just been terribly advised. He's a simple boy who will have had it pumped in to him as a mantra that it is his professional right to earn what he is worth, and not a penny less, and that it should be no issue who is prepared to pay it. It is not the boy himself who goes in to negotiations and there won't be a single word on any of his statements this week that he said or wrote himself.
Of course, Rooney may well have uttered the words 'I want to leave' but only because will have been radicalised (excuse the slightly gauche analogy) by an agent whose sole interest is the player's value, not his welfare.
