To be fair, that was the official line at the time, at a time it was easy to believe that was the case due to the actions of liverpool fans elsewhere, and fans of other clubs too.
However, that has proved to be false now, (well a number of years ago not 'now') and that single fact, that the police let them in, changes the whole weight of the case.
Yes there were fans there that should not have been, but that certainly should not have caused a single death, had basic common sense, such as shutting the centre pen, been used by those in control.
This belief that liverpool fans were rampaging out of control is simply wrong. The authorities on duty that day had a responsibility to act with something resembling competence. If they had many (if not all) lives would have been saved.
