we do give our rail system a lot of stick, without realising how bad it can be elsewhere.

You should try booking tickets online in Italy. And, once you've given up trying to do that, you should try trying to buy tickets on the day for busy trains.

At which point you will enjoy yourself spending a number of hours in cities you hadn't intended to spend time in. Often quite nice, but still...
