My hybrid is a (bottom-of-the-range I think) Trek - have been riding it for 6 years

have had basically no problems with it. So I could recommend that, altho no doubt there are others as good.

'fixies' - fixed gear bikes, so pedals and chain basically attached directly to rear wheel. No derailleur, no gears. V trendy over here (often with absolutely ridiculous narrow handlebars).
