so that's just what I do

two choices really (although others may disagree)

get a hybrid (ie cross between mountain bike and road bike) - so sitting upright posture, and fat tyres. Good if you're going over lots of bumps and speedbumbs and potholes, and might ride offroad a bit at weekend (ie along footpaths etc - not mountain biking).
Guess £300 for a nice one, new?

But you'll be overtaken on the road by lighter bikes. If that would bother you, get a road bike - ie drop handle bars, slimmer wheels. You'll feel the bumps more but go quicker.

re gears - there's increasing numbers of fixies appearing here. (Used to be mostly despatch riders - now there's loads of posers on them.) I've never ridden one so I don't know what they're like. But I ride my geared bikes in winter and don't really have problems with them.
