What about

Closing the door so the cat's can't get in? :)

A couple of things to think about if you want to go down the video thing... It'll be dark, so you might want an infra-red camera. Also, if you don't want to be watching the laptops constantly, you'll need something with noise/movement activation.

Best bet would be a video baby monitor with all those functions - have a look at User Posted Link

Seriously though, having a three year old and a cat, a regular monitor will be fine - keep the door closed and the monitor will warn you if they wake up. You'll be constantly going in and out for feeds and 'just to check' for the first six months anyway.

Bets two tips for monitors: get one with an optional volume cutoff - so it only works when a certain volume is reached - otherwise you'll hear a constant hiss and every creak and movement in the baby's room.

Secondly, if you can - and I wish we had done - get one where the parent's unit is rechargeable via a little docking station. Otherwise you'll be constantly going through batteries or running about plugging it back in as you move around the house.
