Techy Question re AVG and Microsoft Security Essentials

I've used AVG for a while on my PC and also on the kids laptop - I've seen it kick in once to stop something when Mrs KC was using our PC and once on the kids laptop.

Three times in the last six months, but not recently I've had to spend a whole evening cleaning up the kids laptop as a bundle of nasty s**te that has found its way in despite AVG being on and having all the regular updates.

A few weeks ago I was advised to download Microsoft Security Essentials from a podcast I listen to (TWIT / Windows Weekly) and since then all clear but I’ve seen a constant string of warnings about malware, spyware and a Trojan which was picked up when I loaded Microsoft Security Essentials for the first time, despite AVG running. Maybe AVG does not look out for spyware, but I would have though it should have picked up a Trojan.

I didn’t know about Microsoft Security Essentials before hearing about it in the podcast and thought it might have been shipped with Windows. But (rightly or wrongly) I’m assuming that Microsoft as not allowed to bundle Microsoft Security Essentials with Windows as

(a) It may well be deemed to be anti competitive and there would be the same problems with the bundling in of Internet Explorer
(b) The PC suppliers make a shed full of commission selling anti virus packages with the hardware.

So back to my original question, does any one run Microsoft Security Essentials and what do they think of it vs AVG?
