No, no maximum

although boundaries tend to limit it somewhat (7 is not unknown: 3 run and 4 overthrows). Before boundaries were invented the players could run until the ball was retrieved & thrown back to the wicket, so a shot into, say, a river or into a tree could yield a lot of runs.
