I've never really understood the appeal of saunas, steam rooms, etc

I once stayed in a newly-opened Raddison hotel in Ireland and had the full spa to myself. I went into something called an Amethsyt grotto. It was a small circular humid room with a great big chunk of purple rock in the middle. After about 30 seconds I came to my senses and went back to the pool.
