Any wroth word experts still around?

I'm trying to assign new keyboard shortcuts, but for some reason it won't let me assign them. It keeps giving me an error message that it can't change the function of the specified key or keys, even though I know they aren't assigned to any other shortcut.
It's not showing me the exisiting shortcuts either so I can't eliminate the ones already there.
Anyone have any idea how to sort this out? It's winding me up badly
