Ran task manager, went to the processes tab, clicked on View on the menu bar, clicked on "select columns", ticked the virtual memory size box, clicked ok, expanded the window so I could see all the columns, double clicked on the VM size column header to sort everything by the amount of virtual memory a process was using, and noticed that a couple of processes were killing my laptop. So i googled the process names, worked out what the application causing the problem was, uninstalled it, and my laptop is now running like a dream.
Virtual memory problems (or page file problems) can be the silent killer when it comes to PCs, with crappily written apps leaking memory all over the place.
So run task manager and see what it shows up...
