Imagine the chips going in parallel to the goal line and contrast that with perpendicular. The time the second chip passes is different. In case 1, the plane is broke by both chips at 50% of the ball, the second when the whole of the ball has broken the plane. As the number of chips increases, it gets closer to the whole of the ball in all circumstances but i'm pretty sure it can't be 100% accurate. (It would become highly accurate though).
