only insofar as if England had lost 2-1 it might have put my pet hobbyhorse - the morals of officials - in the spotlight. Personally I couldn't have borne it if a thug like Gerrard were to go down in history as a World Cup-winning Captain.
I don't believe foreign players, or the Academy system etc are to blame for the fact that England aren't good enough. I've been watching football for 45 years and in that time our only win over a "big" team in a World Cup Finals came in 1966. At home. The best English team to travel was probably in 1970 - and of course they lost to Brazil because Astle could only kick with one foot. England have never been good enough.
But for all that, we might have got further with a manager who didn't believe that Heskey had something to offer.
