I lived in the south of Germany, but on the times I've visited up north

I've always found the locals to be friendly and quite welcoming, especially if you make an effort to speak a bit of the language.

In bars they drink Pils (Jever is nice, though Kiel will probably have its own brewery), which will often be served in little 0.2l glasses. Fish is popular as a snack or in anything (rollmop herrings are delicious), and all in all it's quite Scandinavian in feel. Good beaches with white sand and clear sea aren't too far away.

It's about the size of Norwich which in Germany ought to mean it has a good nightlife regarding bars and food though the clubs may vary. Hamburg's not that far if you want a big metropolis with all that entails (and in Hamburg all means all).
