Yes those #2 and #3 captains are probably respected in themselves but changes in authority and style really take a while to get used to.
I mean, the criticism most often levelled (other than the tactical one while those tactics made us look great for 18 months before) is that of lack of spirit. Surely that's the kind of thing the captain has, or should have, influence on ?
And THAT is then tough to change when you have it forced upon you as your #1 and #2 captains cannot be made captain again. If you want to change captain, you have to go to #4 and risk the likelihood of all the same transition problems again, perhaps destroying the confidence of #3, and that's not a risk you want to run in the middle of the World Cup.
