The truth is that our "best" players bottled it. Rooney's playing as if he's petrified of a booking. Lampard has frozen like a rabbit in the headlights, which he does in important England games. Gerrard is too diffident - there's no trace of the leadership he shows for Liverpool.

The players who showed best last night were the marginal ones - Lennon, SWP, Defoe. They don't have the ability of the holy trinity, but that doesn't really matter now - we just need players who "execute".
