It doesn't work.
Gerrard on the left, Lennon on the right.
Gerrard moves infield at every opportunity. But so does Lennon-he is meant to be a winger, but, every opportunity he gets, he cuts in as well; we end up with four players blundering around in the middle, no space, lots of confusion-and lose possession.
If you are going to play 4-4-2, then those on the left and right have got to play wide and play the touchlines, if you persist with wide players that actually just want to come and join the party in the middle, then the formation for you is either 4-3-3 or 4-3-1-2, the latter with Gerrard as the "1".
