I am not going to imply that it was the mother and father,

nor am i one for conspiracy theories, but have to agree it doesn't sound quite right. From what I gather in other reports, the fox, i think, would have come in through the patio door, and by the sounds of it, crept through the living room where the parents were sat, unnoticed.
Unless the patio door that was open was in another room, but that has not been clarified. Yet, why would you open a door of another room, rather than the windows of the room you are sat in? Certainly if ythese foxes have already made a pest of themselves.
I did originally think that perhaps the family had a dog that they were not supposed to.
