Well, basically....

...whereas in England you'd have a phrase such as "residency permit" (two words), the Dutch would compound it into one word "verblijfsvergunning".

So, especially when you see words like "internettelefoniebedrijf" (internet telephony company), they look longer than they really are.

The "longest" languages though are French and Hungarian.
