I believe the official story is this.

The club do not run these concerts. They rent the facilities to the promoter who then pockets all the income from ticket sales. The club usually then only get a proportion of the food / drink sales.

Thus I believe the club and the promoter came to an agreement to use the seats story as a way of cancelling/postponing the concert with minimum liabilities.
