so took the route that lost the least amount of money.

You would have hoped that had a cancellation clause if they didn't sell X amount of tickets.

Some artists agree to a flat fee, some a smaller fee plus a % of sales.

I am guessing Sir Tom was less than 100K given other smaller venues he has been playing which have sellout gates of a lot less than 100K total.

The timing of the event was probably poor plus they needed another supporting artist to make the concert a bit more attractive.

The biggest costs of such a concert are the logistics of the stage/PA/light system.(plus all the staff to handle it)

Probably much much more than what Tom was getting paid.
Its actually hard for anyone to make money in one off stadium concerts because of logistics.
