the thing you mentioned about them wasting their time going to the island
Jacob tells them, that they had s**tty lives, and were running away from nothing they could go back to. So he said he provided them with a real purpose and reason to live for
I kind of dig that, he did do that, and then waited for them to be "ready"
I really liked how Ben was outside though. He wasn't in the crash, and they weren't his friends, because he made their lives hell (which isn't what Jacob wanted for them, but equally Ben was a mercenary to the island, he had it's welfare at heart for his own gain)
I liked that he was remorseful and respectful at the same time.
I like Kate saying to Jack that she's waited so long to see him. That says that she lived a long time off the island, and that the church thing wasn't just a gathering of everyone at the same time (this is how I can't work out if the Island dropped just after jack, or whether Hurley and Ben worked it out. It is implied how Ben changes and is Hurley's number 2 that maybe a lot of great things happened after a fresh start)
Maybe that was the pergatory, waiting for Kate, Hurley and loads others to be ready for the church
I dunno, I really liked it all anyway, despite the mistakes
I'm a big old sucker for the way it went. I went into season 6 annoyed that it might just be a dream (as dickhead scrampton nearly ruined for me), or the whole thing might just be that they died instantly, and is an explanation of what could have happened
In the end, I think they gave it a great send off, and you were left knowing that those things did happen. Everything was real like Christian said
In my opinion, it came through. It could have really not done and gone very wrong (I guess the paralell purgatory did it for me, clever way to tie it up)
