iphone people

i see you have to have data roaming turned off to avoid getting stung abroad. but it's set to off as a default anyway so not sure what that is and what exactly i've been missing. and 3g is enabled, and you're not advised to have this turned off so wouldn't you get charged for using this to get data? i thought data was received either through 3g or wifi and was just gonna use any wifi if i needed info. any expanations appreciated. including phonegeek in holland.
