Oh, dear God

This is it. This is what I'm struggling to phrase. Journalists, in a free society, ought to be as important a pillar to the structure of that society as teachers, as welfare, as soldiers, as an honest police force.

And many of them are. But could I say "most of them"? I don't know: I'd need to read the opinions of better-informed people.

What's most upsetting to me is not the damage to the bid, nor the damage to the reputation of the (Labour) peer - and Jeeze, I'm uncomfortable with the idea of siding with a Lord, but that's more about my own f**kedupness - it's the open admission that a journo has taped a private conversation without any apparent sense of shame. If that's the state of the written media, then
