That's the delight of having a choice

Anyone I know that does this, I just stay away from, or ignore. If I rationalise what they're saying, how am I to know what they're saying is serious, or whether they're saying something for me to counter and correct them

Either way, what they're doing is loaded, if you entertain one side that they're taking the piss, they'll pretend to be serious about it. If you take them seriously and correct them with proof, they'll claim they were joking

Even if work socials are free, these are the reasons I don't go.

These people you have to try and work with, and because they're like this, they've no idea of comprimise, when a decision needs to be me. They're only ever interested in you vs them. So many of your suggestions will be no'd on the basis that they're just trying to beat you at whatever they feel the need to gain off you
