I'm just reading Houdini's book on Miracle Mongers. Not anything about mindreading or psychics, but it's a good read. Describes some marvellous feats of showmanship of 1700-1900 and how they were done.
Quaffing mercury, sticking hands in molten metals, necking poisons, sitting in ovens in which meat is cooking etc etc. I recommend it. Free on t'internet too
