If he'd been a Tory backbencher he wouldn't have been taking part in the tv debates for example.

But I agree with you on the sense that they're not closer to labour; I really think and suspect that a lot of the wrangling that's gone on over the last few days (and also suspect that this is why the votes never quite pan out for them) that they are a party unified by the line taht got Clegg into trouble - "We're different from the main two". So gravitating to something because it's different and then deciding why/how it's different, might rather sum them up. As I said down there, a bit straggly.
