You say that but over millions of years the weight of what was to become Newcastle and the

surrounding area pressed down on the hydrocarbon deposits which certainly assisted in the process (from which the word production comes) of the coal formation.

So yes, you could say produced, and dug up. Although strictly speaking, it wouldn't all have been dug up. Brought to the surface may have been more factually correct. Apart from any open cast mines where of course the coal would already be at the surface.
