In future a lot of deals would circle around this kind of scenario

say Chris Martin attracts Man Utd's interest

They offer us ?2m, but then allow the player to stay here on the buy back rule, and a 2 year window

That way his value doesn't inflate and they can have him in two years time, whilst we get some much needed money there and then, and keep the player for 2 more years

If in the two years, a player doesn't improve, man utd walk away from the deal and leave us to do what we like with him. Or they take him back and offload him elsewhere

Deals like that that would easily beat speculation that a player is going to let his contract dwindle out and go elsewhere for free

Having the player stay even though ownership has changed would be concrete knowledge to a manager, and having ?2m would mean the club could buy another player alongside sold player staying, and would steadilly improve from a player sale, instead of being significantly weakened
