the itunes help worked fine. the playlists are stored in the library.xml file. You just import that into itunes direct from teh file menu in itunes and bob's your uncle.

And yes, it might be trouble having two fundamentally identical itunes libraries, but it's less complicated than my previous unorganized set up. As it is, when I rip new stuff I rip it direct to the ext drive and load into itunes from there, so 'shouldn't' be hard to keep them both updated with the same stuff
