You're still the content owner and that includes certain rights

I'm surprised the BBC didn't try to contact you via YouTube before they used it.

Obviously by uploading to YouTube you're explicitly allowing everybody to view; but that doesn't mean anybody can copy or distribute your content whereever they like.

That said, it also depends what YouTube/Google terms and conditions state; but I don't think you give all up all your rights simply by uploading. On Flickr (owned by Yahoo), you can set Creative Commons licences with varying restrictions on use (I set mine so that anyone can use my photos anywhere so long as they credit me). I expect YT have something similar; but I couldn't find it by casual searching.
