I think you are just projecting your own prejudices and calling them "normal"

Blood sports are hugely popular outside urban areas. Fishing is the most popular participation sport in the UK. (And see the Guardian for a big piece about the popularity of fishing in Russia.) Everywhere I go in Kent I come across people of all social classes who shoot, or go rabbiting, or fish - not just posh people but barmen in pubs, the bloke who came to do some tree work the other day, the BT blokes mending the phone line, the chap who brought a courtesy car from the garage ...
