I used to know mate of a mate who was a policeman in Manchester.

He was in the habit of saying "Cheers, Big Ears" to everyone socially.

He described an unfortunate incident in which he was taking the statement of a man with particularly protuberant lugs who'd just been burgled. Almost unconsciously he finished the interview with "Cheers, Big Ears" whereupon the victim stared at him incredulously.
