Blame Bush and the American government ?

Not me, sorry. This is down to capitalism of a type Thatcher knew and loved, where the rich get richer and the poor can get on their bikes. And devil take the hindmost. It is America through and through and has been for a century or more. And Americans love it.
One other thing. I noticed letters in the Times today from 2 Americans asking why Britain was not sending aid. Perhaps someone should mention to them that the National Guard, who deal with disasters, are in Iraq. And as the USA can afford $190bn on freeing Iraquis from Saddam, they can afford to fix their own problems .
