It was a real lesson though

or realisation that simple gestures can be seriously misinterpreted. Spent the next week waiting for the police to turn up. Made worse by the fact that I was in the process of selling the car so thought that I'd look even more suspicious.

Does make me think when you read the frequent tales of 'suspicious man/woman seen in village' that it's probably quite often just that sort of situation. Someone slows down to ask for directions and kid instantly thinks molester.
