Can't go far wrong moving into IT

on the networks side, routers, installation, hardware etc

Set yourself up to do some cisco accreditations, If you're going to take a year out, apply to IT firms sayng you are thinking of doing the above, and they might meet you half way, (ie you work for them during the year, and they pay for the exams, and you learn faster on the job at the same time)
