the club due to their much highlighted prudence whilst in the Premiership had an excellent opportunity this close season upon which to build a team that could take us back to the Premiership at the first attempt. If we went back with a stronger squad we could then add a few more quality players to it and would stand a very good chance of staying up, particularly with Ashton on board and the presumably large transfer kitty that NW would be given due to our prudence the first time round.
But, no, we haven't stengthened in such a way. Now i am pretty sure that if you spoke to Alan Curbishley he would tell you that an essential part of "doing a Charlton" is to make sure that when you are relegated and have to get back up again, to make sure that you come back with better players. Have we done that?
The other big concern is Dean Ashton. He is the man whom for me our chances of not only gaining promotion but should we manage that staying up in the Premiership rest upon. Now i seriously fear that if we are mid table and way off the leaders come January that he will leave. Not only will he leave but he will leave for a fee lower than his true value. Now if he leaves i would say our chances of getting back up this season are very slim.
It is likely that we will have to rely upon a highly pressured season next season to get us up, knowing that if we don't the squad, due to the ending of the parachute payments will have to be culled to a great extent and then we are most probably doomed for a few more years in the Championship wilderness.
Ok, maybe i am being very pessimistic but i seriously think there is a real chance of the above happening. I hope that i am wrong but i just cannot get over what, at the moment appears to be a real cock up with the team strengthening this summer.
A potentialy fatal cock up in terms of our prospects of becoming an established Premiership club.
If the worst case scenario as outlined above happens then big questions have to be asked.
Your thoughts?
