I and many others were urging Worthy and the board to go out there early, decide the players we wnated and get the squad together in time for a decent pre-season for once but once again it didn't happen. One again we have seena succession of piecemeal signings coming in dribs and drabs and not being signed in time to gel as a unit before the season started. I genuinely believe that we have not signed ANY of the players that Nigel probably had in mind at the start of the summer. All we really needed was to keep hold of Jonson and Edworthy (beither of whom wanted to leave), flog off Francis and maybe Green and use the money from those sales to bring in a quality centreback, central midfielder and maybe a winger. There did not need to be this mass turnover of players. The c lub will probably say there were no offers for Greeno and Francis but if we had made it known they were available for a decent price early in the summer people would have bought them.
As for what we have brought in well it can only be descrbed as dross. If these are the players Worthy had in mind at the start of the summer then I am even more worried about his judgement. As it is once again scratching around on deadline day to get any old duffer in on loan when we are no longer the attractive proposition we were earlier in the summer.
There is one club in this division that above all others got players in early this summer. They went and got the players they wanted and whilst they paid fees for most of them they were not fees that we could not have afforded - that club was Sheffield United - they are top of the league!
