Jewell was most fans' ideal, never-going-to-get-him choice when we appointed Roeder; yet he had a huge failure on his CV at that point too, and has since had another one. Many managers stand or fall on the quality of their boards; and are adjudged to have failed when all sorts of financial or political factors made the job close to impossible.
Would I have taken Pardew in January? Yes, though I'd have preferred Boothroyd: around whom there are question marks surrounding how it went wrong at Watford anyway.
