Now I sort of agree with that

If I had to pay the iPhone rateplan (seriously, we have called it iRate!) then I wouldn't have bothered.

I also got mine at a big discount (200 euros) because I work for the sole supplier.

If I'd had to get into a 45 euro a month contract, or pay 800 euros for it as non T-Mobile employees have to over here, then I would have stuck with my HTC PDA and iPod.
