I've just realised that there might be any number of you young 'uns who have never watched The Abyss. Many of you might be put off by its age and the supposition that its special effects will look well mingin innit dough omg omg or whatever you say nowadays.
Thing is, just like "The Thing", it still holds up today, because though it is stuffed with FX they're merely there to support a strong story, and a cracking story it is, too. It has everything: a top baddie, an interesting location, a suspicion of alien activity and more than one Possible Impending Doom Scenario. And its leading man is the rarely disappointing Ed Harris, who makes most films enjoyable in my experience: I can't recall seeing him in a pig.
There used to be a webby called Insultingly Bad Movie Physics (might still be, i suppose) which while it hammered many big movies of the time for passing off fantasy as science, refused to slate The Abyss because of what a great movie it is.
It will doubtless smell a bit of Been Done Since, so if you're watching it for the first time, do remember that it's not copying anything, you just saw the nicked bits first.
Enjoy, or if you're off out to have a life, maybe set the recorder?
All together now: FIGHT!! FIGHT!!!! FIIIIIIIIIIIIIII iiiiiiiiiiiiiii i i i i i i g h ttttttttttt...............
