I've never seen X-factor, can someone please explain

Exactly what is the attraction?
I imagine it to be like American Idol and can't imagine why 20 million people would choose to watch what usually seem to be self-absorbed c**ts singing songs to music that has virtually no merits whatsoever.

Is society really that bereft of taste that it will consume any old s**te that it hears sufficient times?
