The meaning seems arbitrary and silly too

For example Celtic started using 1 to represent the European Cup win.
Rangers responded by using 5 to represent their 50 league titles (although there seems to be some dispute over whether this is accurate). Presumably using 50 stars would have looked a bit odd.
