I spent a few months in Brazil a few years ago

I'd definitely recommend the northeast - really friendly and some truly beautiful places up there, totally deserted beaches, fascinating cities and towns, weird and wonderful food and lots and lots of very fit women - just remember to bag it up!
Rio is a great place of course and is amazing. Bit pricey to stay anywhere near the famous beaches though and not particularly safe either, although nowhere near as dangerous as it's made out to be.
